Description

The Jurassic Coast of Dorset is one of the most-loved parts of the UK for landscape photographers. Key to its draw are extraordinary coastal features like Chesil Beach and the Cliffs of Portland Bill, as well as the stunning ruins of Corfe Castle, and distinctive chalk hill-size sculptures like the Cerne Abbas Giant.
We are excited to be taking our Drone Photography and Videography Masterclass to the Jurassic Coast, for a unique drone holiday experience. Led by Alan Copson, Professional Stock Photographer for more than twenty years, and one of the UK’s most-widely published landscape and travel photographers. And Alan Proto, founder of PhantomFlightSchool, the home of responsible drone flying.
Each day, our goal is to support your drone flying, photography, and videography, in order to ensure that whatever your experience and expertise when you arrive on the Masterclass, every day will be fun, exciting, and full of learning opportunities.

Itinerary

  • Day 1
For those who can get here early, coffee and introductions will start at 10am. Followed by a briefing session about what can be expected during the Masterclass, delivered by our Masterclass leader, the widely published landscape and travel photographer Alan Copson. This will include insights into how Alan has planned and executed the shoots that have led to his images gracing the Front Covers of many Lonely Planet Guides and Rough Guides, including those on the UK, London, New York, the Lake District, and many others. Alan Proto will also talk about the theory of how to fly a drone safely and effectively, and discuss some of the most interesting drone missions he has completed, including filming yacht races in the Solent, skiers in the French Alps, and pipe-bridges at the UK’s oldest Nuclear Fuel facility. We’ll break for a quick lunch at our hotel, and then head out at 1pm, once everyone joining the Masterclass has arrived, to our first flying location, stunning Portland Bill Lighthouse. Then it’s back to our hotel to freshen up before meeting for dinner to discuss the highlights from our first drone flights.
  • Day 2
After breakfast, we meet for a briefing about the days’ locations, the potential shots that can be achieved and things to think about in terms of photographic composition, camera settings, and interesting drone movements while filming to make your videography riveting to watch, before driving 45 minutes to the world-famous Chesil Beach. There are many photographs available online of Chesil Beach shot from eye-height. Many fewer shot from 400 feet, from where it looks spectacular. Later, we head to the Seatown Cliffs to capture stunning shots of the coastline as the sun goes down and the light enters the Golden Hour. Pre-dinner there is a chance to review our images and video together, learning from each other and from the two Alans.
  • Day 3
After a hearty breakfast, Alan Copson starts the day with more insights into the fine margins and total focus on perfection that make his landscape images better than the rest, featuring images he has taken at the locations we will be visiting today, both with his trusty DSLR and with his shiny new Inspire 2 drone. Today we visit Corfe Castle, which needs no introduction, and Chapmans Pool which is less well known, but which makes a stunning location for drone photography and videography. Getting back to the hotel late afternoon, there will be more time before dinner to review our images and video together. Discussing with Alan Copson what has worked, and what could have worked better, and why. Admiring the best of each other’s images.
  • Day 4
After an early breakfast, and after three days on the stunning Dorset coast, we head inland to the Osmington White Horse. This well-known landmark looks fine from the ground. It looks amazing from the sky. Then on to the Cerne Abbas Giant as the finale for the Masterclass. We will get back to the hotel at 3pm, when the Masterclass wraps up.
