“Thanks to everyone for making this such an enjoyable four days. First time I had ventured into the Lake District and it won’t be the last. There are some stunning places to fly from and will be doing some reconnaissance at some stage. It is great to find new places to fly from in fabulous countryside. Great time of the year (apart from the rain at times) with the vegetation really vibrant. Note to self, must get up before daylight to capture the light…”

Description

The Lake District has long been a favourite destination for landscape photographers. The beauty and variety of the scenery is well-known to most of us. We wanted to do something different though. What about a four-day Drone Photography Masterclass with one of the most widely published landscape photographers?
Which is why we are so excited to announce these Masterclasses to the Lake District with Alan Copson, who has been earning a living taking beautiful landscape and travel photographs ever since he left University. Alan has taken the front cover photos for Lonely Planet and Rough Guide books – London; Andalucia; New York; the Highlands and many more.
Each day we will visit an iconic Lake District photographic location, and seek to put a twist on it by photographing it from a drone, rather than from the ground. Alan will show us images he has taken over the years in the locations we are going to visit that day. Discussing the composition and everything else that went into capturing images that capture the imagination. Next, he will show us the drone images he has taken over the last twelve months, in these very same locations. Then, whilst on location, he will support and guide you to ensure you capture the very best photos and video you can with your drone. We hope you will also see new possibilities in each location, and capture a unique image all of your own.

Choose from 4 different itineraries

  • Day 1 – 17th April 2020
For those people able to arrive before 10am, the first drone flights of the week will take place from the lakefront grounds of the Lodore Falls Hotel, where we have exclusive access to fly our drones as this is the sister hotel of where we are staying at the Borrowdale Hotel. At 2pm, once everyone joining the Masterclass has arrived, Alan Copson will deliver his first talk, presenting ground-based and aerial images he has taken at our destination for the afternoon, Brandlehow Jetty, at the Southern end of Derwent Water. The day finishes with an excellent three-course dinner at the Borrowdale Hotel.
  • Day 2 – 18th April 2020
We start the day with a full Cumbrian Breakfast, before Alan Copson talks us through the images he has taken at Friars Crag, at the north end of Derwent Water. We catch the ferry from Lodore Falls to Friars Crag, before putting into practice the ideas Alan has discussed with us for drone-filming and photography here. We head back to the hotel after lunch, when there will be the option to return to Lodore Falls Hotel for more drone flying and photography, or to participate in a post-production Masterclass with Alan Copson.
  • Day 3 – 19th April 2020
After another hearty breakfast, we have a full day, starting with the one hour drive West to Buttermere. A much smaller lake than Derwent Water, presenting different photographic and videographer opportunities and challenges. Then it is a short drive up to Honister Pass, with its steep sided valley walls, rivers, trees and waterfalls all presenting themselves for drone filming. For traditional photographers, a steep climb may be required to capture the best shots. But we can set up on the valley floor, and let the drones do the hard work of climbing the valley sides.
  • Day 4 – 20th April 2020
Up early to make the 45 minute journey to Castlerigg Stone Circle soon after dawn. As the sun rises, the stones cast long shadows over the fields, spectacular when filmed from the sky. This is a more challenging drone flight, as well as a perfect filming and photography location, as from where we take off, the Stone Circle is only just visible over the brow of the hill. Of course, as soon as we are airborne, that all changes. Back to the hotel for brunch, and then it is a chance to review our images and video together. Discussing with Alan Copson what has worked, and what could have worked better, and why. Admiring the best of each other’s images. Looking forward to going home and applying everything we have learned to our future drone flights. The Masterclass finishes at 3pm on Day Four.
