Aerial Photography Workshop on The Isle of Skye
If there is anywhere more spectacular to take photographs than the Isle of Skye, we don’t know it. Stunning scenery, inland and coastal, is all around you. The light changes constantly, and there are spectacular locations off the beaten track in every direction. We are delighted to have teamed up with the multi-award winning landscape photographer Nick Hanson for these Workshops. Nick has been based on the Isle of Skye from March to September the last three years delivering photography workshops for “traditional camera” photographers, and so he knows the area like the back of his hand. He is also an excellent drone pilot, and hence knows the perfect locations on the Isle of Skye where a drone can capture unique and arresting images simply not possible with a traditional camera.

The itinerary throughout the four days is intentionally flexible. When the light is good and the weather is fine, we will be out flying our drones. If the weather is too harsh for drone flying, you are encouraged to bring your DSLR with you, as Nick can teach us as much about shooting with a DSLR as he can about how to get amazing images with a drone. And if the weather gets really bad, we will set ourselves up for review and critique at base camp, as well as sessions on post-production using Lightroom, Photoshop and iMovie.
- Day 1 – 5th June 2020
For those who can get here early, coffee and introductions will start at 10am. Followed by a briefing session about what can be expected during the Masterclass, delivered by our Masterclass leader, the multi-award winning landscape photographer Nick Hanson. This will include insights into how Nick planned and executed his favourite DSLR and drone shots around the Isle of Skye. We’ll break for a quick lunch at our hotel, and then head out at 1pm, once everyone joining the Masterclass has arrived, to our first flying location. Then it’s back to our hotel to freshen up before meeting for dinner to discuss the highlights from our first drone flights.
- Day 2 – 6th June 2020
After breakfast we meet for a briefing about the days’ locations, the potential shots that can be achieved and things to think about in terms of photographic composition, camera settings, and interesting drone movements while filming to make your videography riveting to watch, before driving to our morning flying location. There will be a break from late morning until mid-afternoon, when we will head out again to capture stunning shots of the coastline as the sun goes down and the light enters the Golden Hour. Pre-dinner there is a chance to review our images and video together, learning from each other and from Nick and Alan.
- Day 3 – 7th June 2020
After a hearty breakfast, Nick Hanson starts the day with more insights into what it takes to capture award-winning photographs, featuring images he has taken at the locations we will be visiting today, both with his trusty DSLR and with his shiny new Mavic 2 Pro drone. Providing the weather is on our side, we will visit at least two flying locations during day three. Getting back to the hotel late afternoon, there will be more time before dinner to review our images and video together. Discussing with Nick and Alan what has worked, and what could have worked better, and why. Admiring the best of each other’s images.
- Day 4 – 8th June 2020
After an early breakfast, we will head out one final time in search of more amazing drone photographs and video. Masterclass. We will get back to the hotel at lunchtime, when it will be time to say goodbye and head home, with amazing images, video, and memories of the stunning Isle of Skye.
